According to Proform, the Proform XT 70 treadmill and the Proform  XT 90 Treadmill can burn up to four times the number of calories of conventional flat treadmills. They are, Proform says, like having three machines rolled into one because you get all the cardio benefits of a treadmill, the toning benefits of a stepper and the comfort and low impact of an elliptical.

One feature of the ProForm Proshox series treadmills is the ProShox Intensity system which adjusts cushioning from a firmer to a softer running surface through 24 levels. This makes more sense if you understand that while walking on a Proshox treadmill the deck responds to each step. The air- based cushioning system causes the deck to lower with the weight of each step then raise again to meet the foot. That sounds fine but note that the manual advises to set this intensity to at least 16 take that claim of 24 levels with a pinch of salt.

While this system is said to reduce impact by up to 45% it also keeps the muscles in a state of tenseness increasing the intensity of the workout. Working at an incline is also more challenging and involves more muscle groups burning more calories . Overall Proform claim that 15 minutes of running on a Proshox treadmill is equivalent to running for one hour outside.

There are two Proshox treadmills on the market right now, the XT 70 and the XT 90. Proform is very actively promoting the XT90 which has the better motor although all else seems equal.

User reviews on the Proshox series seem mixed. Some users appreciate the incline levels and at 20% the top incline position is higher than most others wish there was more variety in the incline settings. The Proshox intensity system is great for those who need the higher protection from impact although some users comment that it causes the whole machine to feel less sturdy.

As far as Proform machines go, the Proshox treadmills have a reasonable warranty. Frames and motors are covered for life while parts are covered for two years and labor for one year. This compares favourably to other machines in the Proform stable but is by no means over-generous when compared to Yowza Fitness or Smooth Fitness.

Several of the Proform machines come with free shipping but currently this does not include the Proshox series treadmills. The $125 shipping fee covers curb side delivery and so if opting for the XT 70 or XT 90 make sure you have some help at hand to get it into the house.
